One of the movements in employment and working in recent years has been the highlight on what is known as the Work-Life Balance. This has normally been in regard to women who go out to work and who have families where children may be of school age or below.

The dilemma is a fairly simple one to define. How to try to work a career which may massive obligation in time and yet still be available to get the kids dressed, breakfasted and out to school, help with homework when they come home, or be there at bath-time and to read stories at bedtime. Not so simple to solve.

And it doesn’t matter whether the woman in question is a dentist, nurse or works on a factory floor, the problem is the parallel one and it is so hard to be able to keep all commitments. Legislation has been enacted to try and make it easier to solve by insisting on flexible working hours being available from employers and protection and equality in conditions for part-time workers.

One of the most straightforward ways to get around the problem is simply to Work From Home. Whenever possible this is the way that can make parents available for their children, and they will also benefit from not having to travel to work which saves the time available for the school run. ObviouslyOf course many jobs involve travel to client sites, to locations for meetings with colleagues, project meetings and other reasons to travel that are inevitable.

However, Online jobs are meaning that far more people are able to Work From Home by taking on openinga offered by companies engaged in Internet business which are taking advantage of the technology which permits systems to be accessed by workers across the internet. This is particularly advantageous for those with children of pre-school age as they can be around if they have a neighbour or other carer in to look after the children during the day, and be completely flexible in cases of emergency and mealtimes. Sometimes the same thing!

But all this assumes that we are examining the work-life balance of women. This would be completely wrong. The modern father is as much a part of the upbringing of his kids as the mother. I well recall having furious rows with a previous employer because proposed changes to shift patterns had no choice for me to be around at home for what I considered to the vital times to be with my son whose birth was due within weeksfought my situation, I was told I had to be flexible and it wasn’t well received when I asked why it was just me that was required to be as I wasn’t the only case and why couldn’t the company make allowances for those of us with families? There was no resolution and I left very soon afterwards.

Having or being emplioyed by an Internet business or any other kind of job for that matter which permits someone to do Online jobs means that as we go forward with technology, the practicality of the work-life balance ‘organically’ for both men and women, perhaps both in a household. And all without the necessity for legal proceedings which many times has more to do with social engineering than actually making life better.
