I am aspiring book auther, however I get terrible writers block. Or even worse, I get this idea, start writing about it, and then halfway through I draw a blank, leave the story and never work on it again. Any tips for writing a good story without the writers block?

  1. Vincent O Said,

Hi. There are numerous tricks and techniques for mapping out your story so that you will not get lost or draw a blank in the middle. On my website, I have posted a workshop I conducted at a writing conference that deals with this topic. It is free, and it covers one method for getting an idea, developing the story, mapping out the details, and then writing the whole thing. It is entitled "The Brute Force & Ignorance Approach", and it is under the "For Writers" section in my website, http://www.vincenthoneil.com. I hope it helps.

There are plenty of articles and books with suggestions and even exercises. I tell you, none have ever worked for me. It has to come from you, from inside, not from external sources.
They call it the "self-censor", because you’re too self-conscious of your writing, too judgmental.
The best thing is to relax and accept it as a temporary condition. Try to forget it’s there, because thinking about it will make you more anxious. Do the things you like, whether it’s reading, listening to music, a movie, swimming, tennis. Something totally unrelated.
Believe me, when you least expect it, the writing will come.

just keep starting. even if you have a hard time progressing. you wont get anywhere without starting. if you have a bunch of beginnings its better than NOTHING. writers block requires lots of writing. about anything. just sit and write what comes in your head. open the dictionary and point to a word and just start writing what comes to mind with that. eventually, something will flow. i hate writers block. its so frustrating!!!

I don’t think you can’t write any good story without writers block. It’s completly normal. Just think of crazy things, and just imagine that as a part of your story for a while. Then when you go to sit donw and write, write it. Usually in the process of writing this crazy thing gives you an excellent idea. That’s what I do all the time, and my story is great!

  5. Mary Said,

personally i find it helpful to listen to music that usually takes you away or gets you in a certain mood. otherwise go watch some movies, maybe talk to some friends…get out and do stuff. first you have to stop thinking about the writing and then once you’re mind is off that topic it seems like that is when you can think of things again. just an idea from personal experience. good luck!
